Flags & signals / recognition desk

RECOGNISE THE SIGNAL.
READ THE WHOLE RULE.

Nine introductory circuit-racing flag references, plus a recognition exercise. These summaries leave out display and response details; use the current rules and your actual event briefing.

Scope: Motorsport UK circuit-racing signals. Reference: 2026 Chapter 12, Appendix 8, page 419 and page 420, checked 7 October 2026. Find the current National Competition Rules. Track-day procedures can differ.

A quick recognition exercise

ONE FLAG.
THREE MEANINGS.

Select the broad meaning. You get one scored first attempt per question and an explanation, then move to the next flag. This is not an ARDS test, qualification or assessment of safe driving.

THE REFERENCE BOARD

Recognition comes before response details.
Yellow flag illustration

Yellow

Danger: slow down and do not overtake.

A doubled waved yellow signals greater danger and readiness to stop. Read the full display rules.
Red flag illustration

Red

The session or race is interrupted; reduce pace and follow officials.

No overtaking; follow the prescribed route and instructions. It is not permission to stop unpredictably.
Green flag illustration

Green

Clear after a yellow-controlled danger area; also used on formation or practice laps.

Its context matters. Do not treat every green display as an instruction to start racing.
Yellow / red stripes flag illustration

Yellow / red stripes

Surface grip may be reduced.

Check the event rules for stationary and waved displays.
Blue flag illustration

Blue

Another competitor is close behind or trying to pass.

Stationary and waved displays differ. Overtaking procedures come from the applicable event rules.
White flag illustration

White

A slow or service vehicle is present.

The signal can identify its sector. Read the full display rules rather than assuming it refers to weather.
Black flag illustration

Black

A pit and reporting instruction for the identified driver.

Vehicle identification and the required response matter; use the current rules and briefing.
Black / orange disc flag illustration

Black / orange disc

An apparent technical problem for the identified vehicle.

The driver must respond under the applicable pit/repair instruction; this is not just a caution about grip.
Chequered flag illustration

Chequered

The race or practice has ended.

Follow the event’s return and cooldown instructions. It is not a signal to stop on the circuit.
